This depends on how detailed you want your plans to be.  Do you want your architect to provide every single detail all the way down to the knob on your cabinets? If so, you will pay for that. All architects and engineers price differently.  Understanding these soft costs is an important part of meeting your overall budget.  Make sure you have proposals up front and understand what they include.  How many revisions to your plans are included?  Make sure you understand if you are receiving material schedules or not.  Get timelines in writing for the design process.
